Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has fallen victim to a technology outage — resulting in customers being locked out of their online and mobile banking accounts since the early hours of Monday morning.
Customers were also unable to make in-store payments, using non-CBA Visa cards, at CBA credit card terminals.
"[I'm] currently stuck at a petrol station because I can't transfer funds — the guy behind the counter just keeps staring at me," Jack Tatzzo posted on CBA's Facebook page.
Thousands of dissatisfied CBA customers have also taken to social media to vent their frustration. Here are some of their responses:
"I have direct debit bills coming out today and am unable to transfer money between accounts to cover them. I hope you won't be charging any Overdrawing Approval fees or interest because of this?"
"I am overseas, The app is not working at all and I am not able to contact you because you put me on hold forever! I spent all my international calls credits without getting an answer just waiting listening to that song.... really frustrating and annoying..."
"My daughter has to go to the doctors at 10:15am! How am I supposed to pay when I am there!? When will this be fixed please!?"
"I can't access any of my money, I'm in Singapore and have no cash on me. How long is this going to take?"
A CBA spokesperson told the ABC there had been some progress in repairing the outages at 2:50pm (AEST).
"We're aware some customers may continue to experience issues logging into NetBank and the CommBank app as we restore services," the spokesperson said.
"We know this is frustrating and we apologise for this. Some customers may still have intermittent issues with payments and transfers in NetBank and CommBank app.
"We're working to resolve service as soon as possible. All Visa card transactions on CBA terminals are now processing normally."
The outage appears to be affecting customers who rely almost exclusively on cashless transactions.
"I have a cafe where 75 per cent of my customers pay electronically!! I'm losing money today, please fix this ASAP! I need to pay my rent!" Mario Varricchio posted on the bank's Facebook's page.
CBA is the latest in a long line of major companies to experience a failure in its payment systems.
On the weekend, Coles had to close down its supermarkets across the country due to a "network error" which meant its cash registers could not process sales.
Its competitor Woolworths was also plagued by a similar technical glitch back in April, which forced the supermarket chain to eject customers from 500 of its stores.
In addition, ANZ was affected by a glitch which prevented thousands of its customers from withdrawing more than $200.
