WHEN they bought their dream Stirling allotment in 1997, John and Robyn Northwood knew they wanted to put something unique on it.
Enter architect Pauline Hurren, who worked closely with the Northwoods to create something truly special.
“We’d been to England a couple of times, years ago, and spent some time in the Cotswolds, where you get these beautiful old homes built in yellow stone and that’s what we wanted to create here, so we used the yellow stone from the local quarries here in the Hills,” Mr Northwood says.
“We really like that style of house and love that English look. Pauline Hurren was recommended to us by a friend and she worked closely with us, particularly my wife, because she has a strong interest in design, and it was built by Nick Vartzokas, who did a great job.
“It’s top quality throughout and everything is either brick or stone and one of our favourite features is the Australian oak beams, lintels and supports I was able to source from a client of mine in Mildura, and they are stunning.
“We were very fortunate to have great people working on this project with us.”
The home is set over three levels and has four bedrooms, a character country kitchen, a light-filled conservatory and is surrounded by an established English-style landscaped garden, complete with meandering paths, roses, boxed hedges and a creek.
Now downsizing to a smaller property closer to their daughter in the suburbs, Mr Northwood says the location is second to none and that Stirling has a lot to offer.
“It’s so much cooler here than on the plains, it’s easy to get to the suburbs and in 20 minutes I can be parked in the middle of Adelaide – I don’t know why more people don’t live up here,” Mr Northwood says.
“The people are great and the services here are brilliant. Stirling’s a great place to live and the restaurants are fantastic – it’s got everything you’d want, and people love coming up here. We have friends and relatives who come to visit and they think it’s incredible.
“It really has been a great place to live and we’re really happy with what we’ve created.”
