SYDNEY’S transport system is in meltdown mode with scores of commuters delayed at the height of the Monday peak hour.
Operator Sydney Trains has said a combination of the wet weather and staff shortages was causing delays.
Furious passengers have taken to social media with one saying they had waited for half an hour and no train had arrived. One person said the service was “substandard”.
The organisation has warned commuters on most rail lines, with the exception of the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line and NSW Train Link services, to be prepared for cancellations.
At 7.30 this morning eight services in a row were cancelled at inner west stations leading to delays of more than 30 minutes.
Signal repairs at Town Hall station added to the Monday misery.
In a statement Sydney Trains urged people to check travel apps and the Transport NSW Info website.
“Customers travelling on the T1 North Shore, T2 Inner West and Leppington, T3 Bankstown, T5 Cumberland and T8 Airport South lines are advised to allow plenty of additional travel time due to wet weather and a larger than expected number of staff calling in sick.
“Sydney Trains is working hard to provide a regular service for customers, including supplementary bus services, to help transport people to their destinations this morning.”
Monday’s delays are the latest in a series of meltdowns on the Sydney rail network. A new timetable introduced last year had to be recast as not enough drivers were available. A spike in sick leave also saw the system paralysed.
Last week, the Epping to Chatswood link closed for conversion to the new Sydney Metro forcing up to 20,000 commuters a day onto buses for around seven months.
