Country buyers set a record in Chiswick for unit with dream view

BUYERS from the country wanting a Sydney apartment when they come to visit paid $135,000 above the reserve to set a suburb record for a two-bedroom apartment in Chiswick.

The two-bedroom apartment at 6/19 Bortfield Drive sold for $1,685,000. But it really was something special, with knockout views of the Parramatta River from the terrace.

It was one of the better results from the 637 auctions scheduled for around Sydney. With 357 of the results in to CoreLogic by this evening, the preliminary clearance rate was 67.7 per cent, 5.24 per cent lower than last Saturday.

In Chiswick, LJ Hooker Drummoyne agent Ben Horwood had 11 bidders register, with eight of them actively bidding from $1.3 million.

From the reserve of $1.55 million it was down to just two — the couple from Queanbeyan and an investor.

“The buyers loved that the ferry was at the doorstep,” Mr Horwood said. “They can go into the CBD for dinner.

“In my years of selling real estate, I’ve never seen anything like this apartment.

“The views were just amazing, which you could see from the large terrace.”

He said it smashed the suburb record for a two-bedroom apartment by $385,000, set last year.

In other results, a two-bedroom apartment in the historic Carleton Estate at Summer Hill — the Grosvenor Hospital which was a psychiatric facility and disability institution between 1965 and 1985 — sold for $1,170,000, $20,000 above reserve.

The apartment at 76/28 Gower St was one of just two apartments on the top floor of the original Manor house.

Harris Tripp Summer Hill’s Virginia Nicoll had four groups register and all put in a bid.

The buyers were a first home buyer couple who rented a Victorian-style apartment in Ashfield.

The others had been a tenant within the building, a professional man from elsewhere in the inner west and a woman from Freshwater on the northern beaches.
