Fruit fly fumigation was suspended at a site in the state’s North-West while investigations were made into an “incident” which may have left four staff ill.
A spokesperson from the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment said the “health, safety, and well-being of staff” was the highest priority of the department.
“There has been an incident at the fumigation site at Devonport and this is currently under investigation,” the spokesperson said.
“DPIPWE has voluntarily suspended fumigation activities until further notice while the investigation is underway.
“Four DPIPWE staff were potentially exposed to methyl bromide during fumigation work on Tuesday, February 13.
“DPIPWE reported the incident to WorkSafe Tasmania and the [Community and Public Sector Union] on the morning of Wednesday 14 February after two staff reported feeling unwell,” they said.
The spokesperson said investigations had commenced into the incident, and that DPIPWE was working closely with CPSU and WorkSafe Tasmania.
