US tech giant to double Melbourne jobs

US finance technology company Square will create 60 new jobs in Melbourne, taking its total Victorian-based workforce to more than 100.

Square boss Jack Dorsey, the billionaire co-founder of Twitter, officially opened the mobile payment firm's new Melbourne headquarters on Tuesday.

The larger Bourke Street base will feature the company's first engineering hub outside of North America, Mr Dorsey revealed.

"Australia is an important market for Square," he said.

"As our seller base continues to grow, our team needs to grow with it, which is why we are investing more in Australia - adding new high-skill jobs and expanding our local operations."

The state government has dipped into its coffers to help fund the expansion project, hailing the initiative as a "great vote of confidence" for Victoria's emerging tech sector.

"This is about placing Victoria at the front of the queue for new jobs, new investment and new opportunities for this generation and the next," Trade and Investment Minister Philip Dalidakis said in a statement.

The bulk of the 60 jobs are engineering-related and will help Victoria retain talented local developers while also attracting the best minds from overseas, the government said.

Square, a payment processor that accepts consumer credit cards, launched in Australia more than two years ago and the system's national users have swelled 150 per cent since March 2017.
