Qantas dragged to court over insurance name dispute

Qantas Airways may be forced to re-brand its new insurance business after being dragged to court by an employment firm that claims the Flying Kangaroo stole its name.

The airline launched Qantas Assure in early 2016, selling health, life and income insurance as part of an effort to grow its loyalty arm and branch into new business areas.

But the name has rankled Australian rehabilitation and employment services company Ingeus, which since 2002 has used the Assure brand to market employee mental health and wellbeing support services.

Ingeus, which was founded by businesswoman Thérèse Rein, the wife of former prime minister Kevin Rudd, has lodged action in the Federal Court of NSW to make Qantas stop using the Assure name and pay it compensation.

It claims Qantas has used the Assure name to market services similar to its own, including training, employee assistance programs and the provision of information about psychology.
