Sydney Airport delays as passengers told to avoid terminals due to technical issues

Airline passengers wait to check in at Sydney's T2 Domestic Terminal.

Sydney Airport has told passengers to avoid the international terminal, and one of two of the domestic terminals, as a technical issue causes chaos and delays to outbound flights.

Travellers were urged to avoid Sydney Airport with a technical issue at check-in desks causing delays and disruptions.

Outbound flights, but not inbound flights, were experiencing delays.

Sydney Airport said the technical issue was affecting passenger processing at the T1 International and T2 Domestic terminals.

"We're advising passengers and visitors to avoid T1 and T2 until further notice," a Tweet from Sydney Airport said at 6:08am.

The other domestic terminal, T3, is operated by Qantas and was not experiencing an issue.

Sally Fielke, general manager of corporate affairs at the airport, said T3 was "fully operational" and the problem in the other terminals was only affecting outbound flights.

"We are experiencing outbound delays while we fix this technical issue which we're working to rectify as quickly as we can," she said.

"We will start some manual processing so flights can start to move."

Ms Fielke thanked passengers for their patience.

"We know this is stressful … please check with your airline but we do expect delays."
