THE KFC crisis has deepened after 220lbs of chicken destined for a Devon branch of the fast food chain was found dumped on the side of the road.
The fried chicken firm has been in crisis due to a problem with its supplier causing restaurants up and down the country to run out of meat, forcing bosses to close 629 outlets across the UK.
To make matters worse, five crates of packaged chicken, weighing just over 21.42kig each, have now been found dumped on the side of a busy Devon road this week.
The chicken was due to be delivered to a nearby branch but instead Dean Kenny, a civil engineer who was working in the area, spotted them dumped by a set of traffic lights in Exeter, just minutes away from a branch in Marsh Barton.
Dean reported the findings to the KFC branch on Ashton Road, where he was met by the manager of the store who collected the chicken-filled crates.
He told Devon Live: “I was working on a traffic signal upgrade in the area and I’d just nipped away for lunch.
“When I got back, I found all of these crates dumped on the side of the road – all full of chicken, packaged with KFC branding.
“They must have just opened their window or door at the traffic light and dumped the food there.
“It was so bizarre, the chicken had the kill date and the use by date on it and everything. I just couldn’t believe what I saw.”
Dean said another employee jumped into her car in a rush to collect the chicken soon after he arrived at the restaurant.
“She just left quickly in her AMG Mercedes to pick up the chicken,” he said.
“It was so weird. I don’t where she went or what she did with the chicken.”
The five crates revealed the weight of the packages, which came in at 21.42 kilograms each.
A KFC spokesperson said that the crates of chicken had been dumped by the distributor after the load had been rejected by restaurant bosses.
The spokesperson said: "After our Ashton Road restaurant did not accept a delivery of chicken earlier in the week, it was drawn to our attention that one of our distributor's drivers had dumped the crates on the side of the road.
"This is completely unacceptable.
"As soon as we heard about it team members from the restaurant were sent to collect the chicken and ensure it was disposed of correctly."
Meanwhile, KFC is battling a PR disaster after many of its stores across Devon and nationwide were forced to close as a result of a chicken shortage.
Delivery firm DHL has been blamed after they recently took over the deliveries to the fast food chain.
DHL apologised for the “operational issues” earlier this week.
