A Brisbane barber shop that refused to cut a woman's hair has blamed its lease conditions for turning her away.
Vivien Houston has told the ABC she regularly went to Jimmy Rod's Barber shop at The Gap Village Shopping Centre but was recently told they wouldn't serve her because she was a woman.
The shop's managing director James O'Brien says the business isn't to blame and a new lease with management stipulates women can't be served there so as to avoid competition within the centre's hair salons.
The case has stunned the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties.
"You can't refuse to provide a service on the basis of sex," council president Michael Cope has told the ABC.
"What era are the people who wrote the lease living in?"
Mr Cope says Ms Houston would likely win if she took her complaint to Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Commission.
AAP has sought comment from the shopping centre.
The centre's store guide lists one other hair salon as a tenant.
